Dr. Jeff Roberts is active as a composer, improviser and scholar across a variety of fields in music. His compositions have been performed across the US, Europe and Asia. Originally trained as an improvising guitarist, he also studied guqin improvisation with Master Li Xiangting in Beijing as a Fulbright Scholar. He founded and directs the Walden Percussion Project; an amateur found object improvisation ensemble. His scholarly work has investigated a range of topics, from Haydn and early modern orchestration, to emotion and intuition in Chinese aesthetics, to improvisation in Han Chinese and Ethnic Minority instrument traditions. He is also active as an improvising guitarist in the Beijing Jazz scene.
