We believe that language immersion is essential to any language study. In addition to the language pledge and a tutor, living with a Chinese roommate or a Chinese family will ensure maximum exposure for a full-Chinese language environment. We will also coordinate extracurricular activities that allow you to practice the language and experience China.
Chinese Roommate
Regardless of your language skills, you will have the option to live with a Chinese roommate in the International Student Center (Building#6). Chinese roommates are all students from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE). Although these students speak fluent English, they will sign a language pledge ensuring that you speak Mandarin as much as possible through day-to-day conversations.Chinese Home Stay
If you have spent at least one semester at TBC, you have the option of living with a Chinese family in UIBE neighborhood. Over the years, TBC has built an extensive network of host families who are warm-hearted and open-minded. Most of them speak little to no English. Living with a Chinese family enables you not only to use the language learned in the classroom, but also to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture in a family social setting.Movie Night
All work and no play is not our philosophy. Movie nights showcasing Chinese movies will be organized once a week. Movies in Chinese will be shown with English subtitles complete with snacks and beverages. They are meant to test your progress and be entertaining as well.Chinese Host Student
Apart from offering numerous opportunities for you to practice speaking Chinese, we also provide an aid for beginners to get accustomed to living in China. Students in elementary Chinese will be paired with a host student prior to arrival. They will show you around campus and the surrounding neighborhood during orientation and help you get settled and ready for the program. Host students are also an excellent source if you run into difficulties living in Beijing. As we encourage you to walk out of the comfort zone and practice your language skills as much as you can, host students will not be assigned to intermediate or advanced students.
