The Beijing Center
Given its economic and geopolitical significance and the size of both its landmass and population, China is an ideal classroom for examining environmental sustainability. China has enjoyed rapid economic growth over the past three decades and become the second largest economy in the world. However, environmental problems have accompanied China’s booming, fossil fuel-powered economy: from water pollution to soil erosion, from air pollution to wildlife endangerment. How can China meet its ever-increasing energy and land demands and reduce its impact on the environment at the same time? The answer to this question is crucial for the environmental future of both China and the world as a whole.

The course combines two weeks of travel learning in parts of northern and southern China with two weeks of introductory lectures and field visits in Beijing. The objective of this course is to have students understand China's environmental problems from different Chinese points of view. The experience will also provide students with an understanding of how sustainable systems work and how the structure and function of these systems is altered by human activities.

These goals will be accomplished by providing students with first-hand experience to study environmental issues in China: air pollution, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.

  • Environment Sustainability and Sciences in China, by Prof. Ping Jing
  • The course will be led by an English-speaking professor who will lecture both in Beijing and on the road, supplemented by local guest speakers in their related fields
  • The course will enable students to develop a sophisticated understanding of Chinese beliefs, behaviors, and policies connected with environmental development.
