China is an ideal classroom for examining environmental sustainability, considering its economic and geopolitical significance and the size of both its landmass and population. How can China meet its ever-increasing energy demand and reduce its impact on the environment at the same time? The answer to this question is crucial for the environmental future of both China and the world as a whole. ChinaGreen is a three-credit, four-week long summer environmetal studies travel course. The course involves introductory lectures and field research in Beijing, and almost two weeks of class while traveling through China. Students will acquire an understanding of how sustainable systems work and how the structure and function of these systems is altered by human activities. Through first-hand experience, students will study the major enviromental issues in China: air pollution, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. |
